現地時間2020年9月29日、民主党候補のジョー・バイデン前副大統領とドナルド・トランプ大統領による初めてのTV討論会が開かれた。
米フォックス・ニュースのクリス・ウォレスが司会を務め、激動の一年の中での最高裁判所判事の人事、新型コロナウイルス対応、経済、人種問題、選挙そのものの信用性など、米国に関連する様々な話題について議論が行われた。
討論会では、バイデン前副大統領とトランプ大統領の応酬が激化し、トランプ大統領が繰り返しバイデン前副大統領と司会のウォレスの話を中断する場面があった。また、トランプ大統領が、白人至上主義を非難するよう求められても応じなかったことで、多くのアーティストがTwitterやインスタグラムで自身の考えを共有した。
アリアナ・グランデは「昨夜の討論会で、誰もが行動を起こそうと思いましたよね。みなさんと、みなさんが愛する人、知っている人たちが選挙登録しているか確認してください。期日前投票も可能です。選挙まであと34日です」と述べ、期日前投票が可能な10州を紹介した。
チャンス・ザ・ラッパーは「私たち国民全員が選択する必要があります。大統領があからさまな白人至上主義の人種差別者で、それが国民にとってどのような意味を持つかを軽視し続けるのか、それとも彼を再選させないかです」とTwitterに投稿し、ジョン・レジェンドは「こんな大混乱状態の中で、さらに4年過ごすことは耐えられない」と綴った。
リゾはインスタグラムに動画を投稿し「私はどちらに投票すべきかなんて言わない。今の状況は良いか、安全と感じるか、あなたの思いに政府が耳を傾けていると感じるか自分自身に問いかけて、もし答えがノーならどうすればいいか考えて欲しい」と問いかけた。「討論会を見ても見てなくても、そしてあなたが投票をしてもしなくても、この選挙は行われます。私がみなさんにお願いしたいのは投票して欲しいということです」と投票を呼び掛けた。
フランク・オーシャンもインスタグラム・ストーリーズに「討論会が始まりました。全てフェイクな感じがしますが、残念なことに現実はそうではありません。ドナルドは大統領で、選挙に落選してもホワイト・ハウスを去らないと言われています。投票してください。彼がホワイト・ハウスから引きずり出されるのを見る方が、この討論会よりもずっと娯楽性があります」と自身のウェブサイトで投票登録が可能であることを知らせた。
また、ケイティ・ペリーは、司会のウォレスに白人至上主義を非難するかと問われて答えなかったトランプ大統領の一幕の動画を投稿し、キャプションで「あなたの投票で白人至上主義と露骨な人種差別を非難しよう」と訴えた。

For the record: The President of the United States just point blank refused to condemn White Supremacy on a global platform tonight. All I know is I’m on the side of what I was taught at a young age is morally correct. So I’m with @leemerrittesq . I stand with good people like @osopepatrisse @mrchuckd_pe @tamikadmallory @shaunking @killermike @ihartericka @janayathefuture @ashleemariepreston @aoc @theslumflower @munroebergdorf etc etc. There are so many brave, kind and caring voices to be heard out in the world so don’t despair! We will prevail. The forces of the world can hold us back for a while. But not forever. I believe in equality for all and goodwill towards all mankind.
